Mercy Pharmaceutical Services

The mission of the Pharmacy Department is to provide pharmaceutical care for all patients within the Mercy system. This patient-focused, outcome-oriented approach to patient therapy provides cost-effective utilization of medications.

Decentralized pharmacists monitor and evaluate each patient’s response to therapy. Pharmacists provide recommendations to and collaborate with other members of the health care team. Pharmacists also assist with TPN and pharmacokinetic management, antibiotic selection and dosing, renal dosing of medications and pain management. Skills-based technicians assist the pharmacists with technical functions in the department.

A pharmacist coordinates the pharmacy’s activities for the provision of investigational drugs within the medical center. There are ongoing studies in the areas of infectious disease, oncology and cardiology.

The Drug Information Center serves as a resource to physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care professionals in the hospital, as well as around central Iowa. Pharmacy quality management, adverse drug reaction reporting, medication error monitoring, medication use evaluation and formulary review are components of drug information services.

The Pharmacy Department provides instruction to pharmacy students from the Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. In addition to a general hospital rotation, rotations offered include oncology, anticoagulation management, infectious disease, internal medicine, administrative pharmacy, family practice medicine, drug information, cardiology, critical care and other areas of practice.

The Pharmacy Department provides services to Mercy Medical Center, Mercy West Lakes, Mercy Franklin and several long-term care facilities.

There are also three ambulatory pharmacies. This includes the Mercy Outpatient Pharmacy located on Central Campus, the Mercy West Outpatient Pharmacy located in West Des Moines and the Mercy North Outpatient Pharmacy in Ankeny. IV infusions for home care and long-term care facilities are prepared at the Apothecary.
