Heart Rhythm Disorder Treatment Options

Treatment at the Heart Rhythm Center is highly individualized based on severity and symptoms. Treatment can range from reassurance to drug therapy, to one of the procedures or devices listed below.

Pacemaker

  • Pacemaker sends an electrical impulse to the heart to initiate a heartbeat if the heart beats too slowly.
  • Implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) treats patients with or at high risk for ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. It monitors heart rhythms and, if needed, paces, or sends a small shock to restore a normal rhythm.
  • Catheter ablation is a procedure in which radiofrequency energy is used to treat a variety of fast heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation.
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) can restore and improve the quality of life for patients with heart failure. A special biventricular pacemaker improves the contraction pattern of the heart’s ventricles, allowing the heart to pump more effectively.
