After leading a team of 14 cancer survivors to Mount Everest Base Camp in April, 2011,Dr. Richard Deming, medical director of Mercy Cancer Center, Des Moines, IA is at it again, leading a new group of 19 cancer survivors and support staff to another of the world’s highest peaks, this time to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. Dr. Deming founded Above and Beyond Cancer, an organization that coordinates adventure-based programs for cancer survivors and caregivers that are strategically designed to energize and inspire.
The team departed on January 2. Their two-week trip will include a hike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa at 19,341 feet, where participants will hold the highest ever Relay for Life, At the conclusion of the climb, participants will also complete a service project in Tanzania related to the country’s tobacco control efforts.
